One Laptop Per Child
Headed to Odense friday to meet with the steering comittee behind the One Laptop Per Child pilot project in Nigeria in which I am involved. Three of the team members recently conducted a capacity building seminar at the pilot school in Nigeria. The seminar focussed on creating an understanding of the constructionist learning philosophy centrally rooted in the OLPC project, where knowledge is not merely a commodity to be transmitted, encoded, retained, and reāapplied, but a personal experience that needs to be constructed to be fully understood. Mornings where spent introducing these learning thoughts while the afternoon was spent giving the teachers a chance to familiarize themselves with the XO. 10 of the 12 teachers attending the seminar had never used a computer before, yet 5 of the teachers have following the seminar sent e-mails back to the steering group here in Denmark.
